Beverage Industry Responds to Journal Article on Sweeteners; Body ...

Beverage Industry Responds to Journal Article on Sweeteners; Body of Science Does Not Support Latest Inconclusive Findings

In response to ?Consumption of Artificial Sweetener and Sugar Containing Soda and the Risk of Lymphoma and Leukemia in Men and Women,? a study published today in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the American Beverage Association issued the following statement:

Statement:

?The authors said it best:? their study has ?limited application? and their findings may be ?due entirely to chance.? We agree.

The fact is:? Aspartame, which is an ingredient found in many beverages as well as thousands of foods, has been deemed safe for decades by the world?s leading toxicologists, as well as the National Cancer Institute and other regulatory agencies and public health experts around the world.? Let's stick to the facts.?

?

Additional Background Information:

On Aspartame:

  • The bottom line is that consumers should have complete confidence in aspartame based on the findings of the vast body of available studies, conducted by some of the world?s leading toxicologists.
  • Aspartame is one of the most thoroughly tested ingredients of all time with more than 200 scientific studies confirming its safety.?
  • It has been repeatedly reviewed and approved by regulatory agencies around the globe, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the British Food Standards Agency, the European Union Scientific Committee on Food, and the Joint Food and Agriculture Organization/World Health Organization Expert Committee on Food Additives.
  • Quite simply, aspartame is a safe ingredient for human consumption that provides an effective way to reduce caloric intake without sacrificing taste and helps consumers maintain a healthy weight, a position supported by the American Dietetic Association. The only exception is that people born with phenylketonuria (PKU) cannot metabolize phenylalanine and therefore should avoid aspartame from any source.
  • There is no credible evidence linking aspartame consumption in beverages to cancers of any kind.
  • In 2006, the National Cancer Institute published a long-term study of almost 500,000 people that showed no link between aspartame consumption in beverages and cancer.??
  • In 2007, an expert panel of some of the world?s leading toxicologists looked at more than 500 studies, articles and reports on aspartame?s health effects spanning the last 25 years.? The renowned experts found ?no credible evidence? that aspartame is carcinogenic, neurotoxic or has any adverse health effect, even when consumed in amounts greater than the established average daily intake (ADI).?

On Study:

  • The authors note that there are limitations to their paper, including self-reporting and imperfect assessment of aspartame intake.
  • Importantly, the authors also reference previous work by the European Ramazzini Foundation, whose findings are controversial and not based in sound science.? In fact, the laboratory practices, animal health conditions, methods and conclusions of previous studies from this same group of researchers have been questioned by respected scientific and regulatory organizations, including the United Kingdom?s Food Standards Agency, the European Food Safety Authority and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.? Furthermore, they have consistently failed to provide all of their data on their previous studies to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration or other independent bodies for review.?
  • It is important to note that the author?s own conclusions that, because of the differences observed in the study outcomes, the findings might be due entirely to chance and not real associations.

On Leukemia:

  • According to the Mayo Clinic, ?scientists don?t understand the exact causes of leukemia.? In fact, the Mayo Clinic website notes that it ?seems to develop from a combination of genetic and environmental factors.?
  • Nowhere is consumption of sweeteners listed as a risk factor.

On Lymphoma:

  • The National Cancer Institute does not list consumption of sweeteners among the risk factors.?
  • However, according to the Mayo Clinic, a factor that may increase risk is older age.? Importantly, the study participants were tracked over 22 years.

On Sugar:

  • The body of available science has not shown that sugar intake causes adverse health effects in humans.?
  • Glucose, a simple sugar and part of the ingredient sugar (sucrose), is the essential fuel source for every cell in the human body.? Without an adequate supply of glucose, whether taken directly from the diet or produced by one?s body, life is not possible.

Eco-friendly optics: Spider silk's talents harnessed for use in biosensors, lasers, microchips

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) ? Spiders use their silk to catch lunch. Now physicists are using it to catch light. New research shows that natural silk could be an eco-friendly alternative to more traditional ways of manipulating light, such as through glass or plastic fiber optic cables. Two teams independently exploring possible applications for the material's photonic talents will present their latest breakthroughs at the Optical Society's (OSA) Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO) 2012, to be held next week in Rochester, N.Y.

Biomedical engineer Fiorenzo Omenetto of Tufts University in Boston will discuss his group's work fabricating concoctions of proteins that make use of silk's optical properties for implantable sensors and other biology-technology interfaces.

Physicist Nolwenn Huby at the CNRS Institut de Physiques de Rennes in France will talk about her team's use of pristine, natural spider silk to guide light through photonic chips -- technology that could give birth to silk-based biosensors and medical imaging devices for use inside the body.

Both groups hope their work will lead to medical advancements that take advantage of the optical properties of silk. One of the strongest fibers in nature (the dragline used by spiders to form the structure of their webs is stronger, pound for pound, than steel), silk is biocompatible, biodegradable, and extremely hardy. Produced naturally by spiders and silkworms, it is a renewable resource. Added to these benefits is the more recent discovery that silk is a gifted manipulator of light, which can travel through silk almost as easily as it flows through glass fibers.

Though it may not be the best material in every one of these categories, the combination of talents is what makes silk such an attractive material to study, Omenetto explains. "There are materials that can do one of each, or a few of each," he says, "but seldom all of each."

Silk-based 'plastics' for implantable devices

In their efforts to exploit silk's optical merits, Omenetto's team is developing silk-based materials that look like plastic, but retain the optical properties of pristine silk. One of the advantages of these materials is that they can degrade and be reabsorbed by the body. A sensor or tag made of silk protein could be implanted -- at the site of a fractured bone, for example, to monitor healing -- and merely left to dissolve. Once its purpose had been served, the silk tag would harmlessly fade away.

Omenetto is currently investigating a range of questions, from fundamental to commercial, and they go beyond implantable optics. His team recently won an INSPIRE grant from the National Science Foundation to create electronic components that are compostable. He has developed and tested a blue laser made from silk fiber-doped materials that is not only biodegradable but also uses less power to induce lasing than the acrylic materials that are commonly used. He is also exploring the possibilities of using silk to integrate a technological component with living tissue. "We're thinking of how to scale up [production], how to interface with current technology," Omenetto says. He hopes some of the more "gadget-like" fruits of his labor will be commercially available within the next five to 10 years.

Guiding light with real silk

Silk-doped composites are the subject of Omenetto's talk at FiO, but the optical merits of pristine silk will be the subject of Huby's. Her team is experimenting with pure spider silk as a relatively inexpensive and ecologically friendly way to manipulate light within photonic chips.

As a light guide, silk works in a way comparable to the more commonly used glass microfibers that carry light within a chip; but silk comes out of the spider ready to use, whereas glass microfibers have to be heated to high levels and carefully sculpted at great expense. Huby's silk is collected by a group of molecular spectroscopy experts led by Michel P?zolet of Universit? Laval in Quebec, then integrated into circuits at her team's lab at Rennes. To her knowledge, this is the first time the optical properties of pristine silk have been exploited.

By integrating real spider silk into a microchip, the researchers found that silk could not only propagate light but could also direct light, or "couple" it, to selected parts of the chip. Huby hopes this work can be used to create biosensors that could detect the presence of a molecule or the activity of a protein: as light waves passed through a blood sample, for example, the molecules would change the properties of the light wave in an observable way.

The next step for Huby's team, she says, is to see what biologists and medical professionals need and then create devices they can use. Besides making biosensors, spider silk could also provide a light source for taking pictures inside of the body. Natural silk is only five microns in diameter, less than a tenth the width of a human hair. A pristine fiber of spider silk, which is so thin and strong, could carry light into the body through a very small opening, providing less invasive ways to do internal imaging or even chemical diagnoses using spectroscopy, which is the analysis of matter based on its interaction with light.

As a spokesman for silk's status as the material of the future -- he gave a TED talk on the subject last year -- Omenetto believes these recent successes will help more people become excited about the potential of this remarkable material.

"I like to think we threw a big stone in the pond," Omenetto says. "And hopefully the waves will continue."

Both presentations take place Monday, Oct. 15 at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center in Rochester, N.Y. Presentation FM3E.3. "Silk-based Optics and Photonics" by Fiorenzo Omenetto is at 2:30 p.m. followed by presentation FM3E.4 "Optical Propagation and Integration of Pristine Major Ampullate Spider Silk Fibers" by Huby et al. at 3 p.m.

Stratford's San Jose Students Raise Money For Leukemia ...

On October 11, 2012 by stratfordschools

This year, Stratford students helped out too and participated in a Coin Drive contributing to Light the Night.? Light the Night is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society?s evening walk and fundraising event. It is the nation?s night to pay tribute and bring hope to thousands of people battling blood cancers and to commemorate loved ones lost.? We are pleased to announce that our Stratford San Jose campus alone was able to contribute $1,613.07! Students from preschool - 5th grade worked hard to save pennies they found at home, requested from their parents, neighbors and family members, and brought them to school in an effort to help those suffering from blood cancer. Through classroom discussions and wonderful lesson plans that the teachers put together, students learned about Leukemia and Lymphoma and the effect it has on people. The children immediately wanted to help contribute to research funds as they are hopeful that one day scientists and doctors will discover a cure. Stratford is so proud of our students for being such caring and compassionate members of their communities. Their desire and motivation to host this coin drive, shows that children can make a big difference in our world.

?Last year, I had the privilege to walk along the Stratford Stars team for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society?s Light the Night event in downtown San Jose.? It was wonderful to see our community come together to support families affected by blood cancer.??? This year, when asked if we wanted to participate in a Coin Drive, we jumped at the chance.? I was amazed to see children as young as preschool come to school each and every morning with bags of coins.? One day I hope they understand that a small deed can make a great impact, especially when we all join together,? Said Allison Weiss, Preschool Principal. ?As the Presidential election begins for our nation, we look to find our internal leaders at Stratford.? Our student body selected peers that embodied good character and are committed to making positive changes in their school.? Throughout the course of the year, they will be responsible for similar works of charity like the Coin Drive,? She added.

From let to right top to bottom we have the following students?

DNP Gmail now searches attachment text, homework hoarders rejoice!

As Google continues to improve other areas of its broad ecosystem, it's always great to see that the company hasn't abandoned its search simplification roots. A spokesperson for the company told us, "we recently added the ability to search within Gmail attachments as part of our ongoing efforts to improve search." This potential time-saver plays nice with Word docs, PDFs, PPTs and many other file extensions. Currently in its infancy, some of your older attachments may not have been indexed yet, so you might not be able to "share" last year's term paper with your younger sibling until Google brings the feature up to speed. However, if you're just looking to locate that recently received Word doc filled with notes from your study buddy, then have at it.

(AP) ? On the eve of the first presidential debate, the early autumn Republican reviews are in for Mitt Romney's campaign, and they are not pretty.

In some states, candidates who share the Nov. 6 ballot with the former Massachusetts governor have taken steps to establish independence from him. Party strategists predict more will follow, perhaps as soon as next week, unless Romney can dispel fears that he is headed for defeat.

Former Republican National Chairman Haley Barbour recently said that Romney's campaign has been focusing on polling, political process and campaign management, "everything but Obama's policies and the failure of those policies."

(AP) ? The Minnesota Orchestra has canceled its concerts through Nov. 25 as a lockout of musicians takes effect.

The cancellations announced Monday affect 17 performances starting Oct. 18. Ticketholders will be notified by phone and in writing about obtaining refunds or exchanging tickets for future performances.

Management and musicians failed to reach a new agreement Sunday before the old contract expired at midnight.

Management rejected musician proposals for arbitration and for allowing the musicians to play during negotiations. The musicians rejected a management offer that would've cut salaries an average of 34 percent, lowering the current annual average from $135,000 down to $89,000.

The musicians plan to rally outside Orchestra Hall at 1 p.m. Monday. They issued a statement renewing their call for an independent analysis of the orchestra's finances.

High-Arctic heat tops 1,800-year high, says study; Modern spike outmatches naturally driven 'medieval warm period'

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Summers on the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard are now warmer than at any other time in the last 1,800 years, including during medieval times when parts of the northern hemisphere were as hot as, or hotter, than today, according to a new study in the journal Geology.

"The Medieval Warm Period was not as uniformly warm as we once thought--we can start calling it the Medieval Period again," said the study's lead author, William D'Andrea, a climate scientist at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. "Our record indicates that recent summer temperatures on Svalbard are greater than even the warmest periods at that time."

The naturally driven Medieval Warm Period, from about 950 to 1250, has been a favorite time for people who deny evidence that humans are heating the planet with industrial greenhouse gases. But the climate reconstruction from Svalbard casts new doubt on that era's reach, and undercuts skeptics who argue that current warming is also natural. Since 1987, summers on Svalbard have been 2 degrees to 2.5 degrees C (3.6 to 4.5 degrees F) hotter than they were there during warmest parts of the Medieval Warm Period, the study found.

Researchers produced the 1,800 year climate record by analyzing levels of unsaturated fats in algae buried in the sediments of Kongressvatnet lake, in western Svalbard. In colder water, algae make more unsaturated fats, or alkenones; in warmer water, they produce more saturated fats. Like pages in a book, the unsaturation level of fats can provide a record of past climate. So far, most Arctic climate records have come from ice cores that preserve only annual layers of cold-season snowfall, and thus cold-season temperatures. But lake sediments, with their record of summertime temperatures, can tell scientists how climate varied the rest of the year and in places where ice sheets are absent.

"We need both ice core and lake sediment records," said Elisabeth Isaksson, a glaciologist at the Norwegian Polar Institute who was not involved in the study. "Here, Billy has found something that tells a different, more detailed story."

In looking at how summers on Svalbard varied, researchers also discovered that the region was not particularly cold during another recent anomalous period--the "Little Ice Age" of the 18th and 19th centuries, when glaciers on Svalbard surged to their greatest extent in the last 10,000 years and glaciers in many parts of Western Europe also grew. They suggest that more snow, rather than colder temperatures, may have fed the growth of Svalbard glaciers.

Evidence from tree rings and ice cores shows that southern Greenland and parts of North America were warmer from 950 to 1250 than today, with the Vikings taking advantage of ice-free waters to settle Greenland. Some regions also saw prolonged drought, including California, Nevada and the Mississippi Valley, leading some scientists to coin the term Medieval Climate Anomaly to emphasize the extreme shift in precipitation rather than temperature. A natural increase in solar radiation during this time was responsible for warming parts of the northern hemisphere, with a rise in volcanic activity from 1100 to 1260 causing milder winters, University of Massachusetts scientist Ray Bradley explained in a 2003 Perspective piece in Science. Bradley is a co-author of the Svalbard lake sediment study.

Western Svalbard began to gradually warm in 1600, the researchers found, when the northern arm of the Gulf Stream, known as the West Spitsbergen Current, may have brought more tropical water to the region. In 1890, the warming began to accelerate, with researchers attributing most of the warming since about 1960 to rising industrial greenhouse gas levels. Ice cores from Svalbard, by contrast, show a slight cooling over the last 1,800 years. The conflicting evidence suggests that temperatures may have fluctuated more sharply between winter and summer, said Anne Hormes, a quaternary geologist at the University Centre in Svalbard who was not involved in the study.

D'Andrea and his colleagues dated their lake cores by analyzing grains of glass spewed by volcanoes hundreds of miles away in Iceland. Those past eruptions-- Sn?fellsj?kullin 170, Hekla in 1104 and ?r?faj?kull in 1362 -- all left unique chemical time markers on Svalbard's lake sediments. "We know fairly precisely when these eruptions occurred, which is rare in the geologic record," said study co-author Nicholas Balascio, a scientist at University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Recent temperature measurements show that the Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet, with sea ice this summer shrinking to its smallest extent on record. Natural feedbacks are amplifying the warming as loss of reflective sea ice causes the ocean to absorb more of the sun's energy, melting more sea ice, which causes more energy absorption, and so on. Climate models suggest that by 2100 Svalbard will warm more than any other landmass on earth, due to a combination of sea-ice loss and changes in atmospheric and oceanic circulation, according to the International Panel on Climate Change 2007 report. In a study published last year in the journal Advances in Meteorology, Norwegian researchers estimate that average winter temperature in Svalbard could rise by as much as 10 degrees C, or 18 degrees Fahrenheit.

The study was funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the Keck Geology Consortium.

Obama and Romney: Is there a relationship behind the politics?

Though their political fates are entwined, President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney have rarely connected personally. Wednesday's debate in Denver will be the first time the two men have met face-to-face in five years.?

By Julie Pace,?Associated Press / September 30, 2012

President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney both campaign in the battleground state of Ohio on Sept. 26. Fierce and determined competitors, Obama and Romney haven't had many opportunities to connect personally outside of politics.

It was one of the few personal interactions between Obama and Romney.

"He was kind enough to call our home when my wife was ill, and he said that he and Michelle had my wife in their prayers," Romney said in an interview after the call. "I said, 'Mr. President-elect, Ann and I have you in our prayers'. And we do."

Even as their political fates have become more entwined, Obama and Romney have had little opportunity to connect directly. In fact, when the Democratic president and the former Republican governor of Massachusetts stand alongside each other during Wednesday night's presidential?debate?in Denver, it will be their first face-to-face meeting in nearly five years.

"I don't really know him well," Obama said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I think Gov. Romney obviously has achieved extraordinary success with his businesses, and he's obviously very focused on achieving the presidency. He cares deeply about his family, and I think he cares deeply about his faith."

Romney has had similarly kind words about the president as a father and family man. But most of their descriptions of each other during the campaign are far less complimentary, and that probably will be the case in the?debate.

Romney accuses the president of having "more European than American" views. Obama says Romney has written off half the country.

The two do have a few similarities. They're both graduates of Harvard Law School; Romney also has a business degree from the Ivy League university. Each is a multimillionaire, though Romney's estimated $250 million fortune far exceeds Obama's net worth, which is as much as $8.3 million.

When people get one of their first looks at the rivals standing side by side Wednesday, they'll see a Republican who is 14 years older and an inch taller than the 51-year-old president, who stands 6-feet-1.

Obama and Romney first met in 2004 at a gathering of Washington's political and media elite. Romney, then governor, and Obama, a senator-elect from Illinois, were picked by the Gridiron Club to deliver speeches at the group's dinner. The private event's festive atmosphere, however, meant their dueling speeches were more about cracking jokes than outlining their policy differences.

Candidates Mum on Climate Change

MEDINAH, Illinois (Reuters) - Medinah Country Club was bathed in sunshine for the second day of the Ryder Cup on Saturday and for the cheering galleries who lined the fairways and the U.S. players, it was a perfect autumn day in America's Midwest. Not so for the Europeans, especially Graeme McDowell, who two years ago was the hero of his team's win in Wales. On Saturday, he trudged off the 18th hole after losing his foursomes match with Brandt Snedeker and Jim Furyk just 24 hours after he and his partner Rory McIlroy had beaten the same American pairing. ...

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. builders spent more to construct homes in August, further evidence of a housing rebound. Still, the increase couldn't offset cuts in public projects and commercial real estate.

Overall construction spending dipped 0.7 percent in August from July, the Commerce Department reported Monday. It was the second straight monthly decline.

The decline lowered construction spending to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $834.4 billion. That's nearly 12 percent above a 12-year low hit in February 2011 and roughly half of what's considered healthy.

Spending on residential projects rose 0.9 percent in August. That pushed residential spending to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $273.5 billion, nearly 18 percent above the level from a year ago.

Spending on single-family homes increased in August for the fifth straight month, while apartment construction spending rose for the 10th month in a row.

Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist for Capital Economics, said the increase in residential spending "provides more evidence that the housing recovery is gathering pace. Unfortunately, the housing sector is not large enough to set the overall economy alight."

Spending on office buildings, commercial projects such as shopping centers and hotels all fell in August. That lowered private nonresidential activity 1.7 percent to an annual rate of $288.7 billion, or 7.2 percent higher than a year ago.

Government construction activity dropped 0.8 percent in August to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $274.9 billion. That's down 3.5 percent from a year ago. State and local activity fell 0.9 percent in August, while federal projects edged up 0.3 percent.

Though new homes represent less than 20 percent of the housing sales market, they have an outsize impact on the economy. Each home built creates an average of three jobs for a year and generates about $90,000 in tax revenue, according to the National Association of Home Builders.

Construction of single-family homes rose last month to the fastest annual rate in more than two years. Sales of newly built and previously occupied homes are up compared to last year, helped by the lowest mortgage rates on record.

While the housing market has strengthened this year, the broader economy has languished. High unemployment and weak wage growth have kept consumers from spending more freely. Manufacturing has stumbled, and businesses are investing less.

The Federal Reserve is hoping to drive mortgage rates lower to make home buying more affordable, and therefore help the economy grow. Earlier this month, it said it would spend $40 billion a month to buy mortgage-backed securities until the job market shows substantial improvement.

The broader economy is likely to benefit from a stronger housing market. When home prices rise, people typically feel wealthier and spend more. Consumer spending drives nearly 70 percent of economic activity.
